Trump Claims Victory Over Chicago’s Immigration Enforcement Issues
President Donald Trump has announced what he considers a victory in Chicago after a contentious period with pro-sanctuary figures like Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson regarding immigration policies in the city.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed pride in the significant drop in auto thefts, shootings, robberies, and other violent crimes in Chicago, despite pushback from local leaders. He stated, “I’m proud to announce that in Chicago, Illinois, auto thefts, shootings, robberies, violent crimes, and more have all dropped dramatically, despite vehement opposition and obstruction from the Mayor and Governor.”
According to Trump, since the initiation of Operation Midway Blitz by the Department of Homeland Security, shootings have decreased by 35 percent, robberies by 41 percent, and carjackings by nearly 50 percent. He mentioned that these figures come from “only an initial small federal force and not a complete ‘surge’ of federal resources,” which he believes indicates potential for more improvements.
He complemented these developments by attributing the successes of this operation to the dedication of federal law enforcement, claiming they managed to overcome “extraordinary resistance from the radical Democratic ‘leadership’ in Chicago and Illinois.” He also noted the ongoing threats against ICE agents from violent groups, which he feels local officials are failing to address adequately.
Operation Midway Blitz, which started on September 8, has seen a substantial deployment of federal agents to the Chicago area. Thousands of undocumented immigrants have been arrested, including individuals with violent backgrounds and gang affiliations.
However, this operation faced significant backlash from Pritzker, Johnson, and segments of the public. There have been reports of violent confrontations with civilians attempting to disrupt federal actions, with some incidents involving physical altercations, vehicle blockages, and even gunfire directed at agents.
A recent incident highlighted these tensions; federal agents faced gunfire during an operation in the Little Village neighborhood, where an undocumented immigrant with a criminal history was later apprehended. This incident was described by Homeland Security as part of a troubling rise in assaults against federal law enforcement.
Pritzker continues to openly criticize the federal operation. He remarked on a photo of Border Patrol agents and subtly conveyed his discontent with their approach, describing it as an unfortunate spectacle that undermines local neighborhoods. He stated, “I’m tired of making fun of our neighborhoods and communities.”
In a move to mitigate federal enforcement, Johnson has established “ICE-free zones” throughout the city, which restrict the use of municipal properties for immigration operations.
As these developments unfold, officials have yet to respond to inquiries about the ongoing tensions and operational strategies from their offices.
