Islanders Top Prospect Suspended for Fan Interaction

The Islanders’ rising star, Kashawn Aitchison, received a two-game suspension following an incident involving a fan.

Aitchison, who was selected 17th overall in the 2025 NHL Draft, was suspended by the Ontario Hockey League after he was seen throwing water at a fan. This occurred when a supporter was chastising a Barrie Colts player who was leaving the ice after a shootout loss to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Saturday.

The game itself was quite heated. The Colts initially led 3-1, but Greyhounds’ forward Marco Mignosa stirred things up by taunting Barry, who ended up scoring the shootout winner—leading to both teams converging on the ice amid rising tensions.

As the Colts exited the ice, a fan in a red jersey and a backward cap was loudly criticizing the Barrie players. In response, Aitchison decided to toss a water bottle in their direction.

It’s still unclear if the fan’s remarks were specifically directed at Aitchison.

The OHL outlined that this “interaction with the crowd” warranted the two-game ban. According to the OHL rulebook, any player or team official who physically interferes with a spectator, engages in an altercation, or throws an object at a spectator can face automatic penalties. The referee is then required to report such infractions, giving the Commissioner authority to impose further sanctions.

This suspension means Aitchison will be absent for Thursday’s game against Saginaw and Saturday’s match against Peterborough, breaking his impressive scoring streak at seven games.

Just this past weekend, Aitchison’s six-game scoring run came to a halt.

The 19-year-old currently stands out as the OHL’s leading offensive defenseman, with 15 goals to his name and ranking second among all defensemen with 24 goals overall.

Prior to the draft, he drew comparisons to former Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba. Islanders rookie sensation Matthew Schaefer remarked on Aitchison’s value, saying, “He’s a solid player to have on your side. You definitely don’t want him as your opponent.”
