Making Islanders a key destination just like the NHL draft

Player Empowerment Era in NHL and the Islanders’ Future

The new era of player empowerment in the NHL is putting the Islanders’ long-held beliefs to the test. They have Matthew Schaefer and UBS Arena, but they lack the glitz and media attention of Broadway, along with the close access to New York City.

Historically, the Islanders have been regarded as the unattractive sibling to the Rangers—a franchise that hasn’t been perceived as a go-to destination. But with changing circumstances, can this narrative shift? The answer carries significant weight for the team’s trajectory moving forward.

Building around Schaefer is vital for the Islanders, as they need to avoid falling into a rut similar to what Ottawa and Detroit experienced in their early days. However, it’s unclear how or if the Islanders will make substantial changes this summer.

General manager Mathieu Darche holds the 13th pick in Friday’s draft, and there’s talk he might select the best player available. Predicting who that might be is tricky, but names like Ethan Belchets, Tynan Lawrence, Ryan Lynn, and Wyatt Cullen could potentially be on their radar.

This pick also stands out as Darche’s most easily tradable asset, should a compelling opportunity arise.

So far, the Islanders have been somewhat on the outskirts of offseason buzz, with players like Brady Tkachuk and Jordan Kyrou being traded, and Dylan Larkin seeking a trade. There are speculations around other U.S. Olympians like Connor Hellebuyck and Zach Werenski as well.

Darche’s strategy seems to revolve around making the playoffs while also preparing for a future Cup contending team, which means he’ll have to navigate carefully. He has publicly noted his disinterest in this year’s free-agent class, with $10 to $15 million in cap space and significant needs on the roster, especially on the defense and scoring fronts.

Identifying a standout player to pursue in a trade is challenging, particularly now that Kyrou has been moved. Still, Brayden Schenn was once an unexpected target. Interestingly, Schenn commented on the Islanders’ perception within the league, highlighting how a superstar with a positive reputation can attract talent to the team.

The recent trend has shown that while the Islanders may not be considered a top destination, players who arrive often don’t want to leave. Key figures like Schenn, Bo Horvat, and others have spoken highly of their experience with the team.

Schaefer’s immense talent could elevate the Islanders’ standing and make Long Island a more appealing option for players. The Rangers have been chasing Connor McDavid for years, yet the Islanders might actually offer a better hockey environment with less media scrutiny. Who knows? Maybe McDavid will listen to their pitch someday.

As for how the Islanders will navigate these developments leading up to Friday, it will require seizing opportunities and showcasing their appeal.
