Rangers Achieve Season’s First Home Win Against Predators

The Rangers secured their first home victory of the season on Monday night, defeating the Predators with a score of 6-3—a crucial moment for the team.

Vincent Trocheck made his return from the injured reserve list after missing 14 games due to an upper-body injury. Coach Mike Sullivan noted that Trocheck’s presence significantly changes the team dynamic, describing them as a “whole new team.”

Trocheck is recognized as a key player; coaches referred to him as a center after Tuesday’s practice. His return has created a balance within the team, which Sullivan believes is vital for consistent winning in the league.

This impact was particularly noticeable on the second line during Monday’s game, showing the resurgence of one of their top players, Alexis Lafreniere.

Lafreniere has been performing well since the season began.

Heading into Wednesday’s matchup against the Lightning, Lafreniere had accumulated 11 points—three goals and eight assists—in 17 games. In comparison, after 17 games in 2024, he had recorded 14 points, with seven goals and seven assists.

This season, he has taken 37 shots, averaging 2.2 per game, which is an uptick from his previous average of 1.9. However, he also has the second-lowest plus-minus on the team at minus-7, only ahead of Mika Zibanejad, who sits at minus-9.

Despite these stats, Lafreniere shone in front of a home crowd, arguably putting in his best performance this season against the Predators. He scored one goal and provided two assists, marking his fourth career game with three or more points.

While Lafreniere has enjoyed two two-point games this season, this was notably his first three-point game since March 2024 against the Maple Leafs.

Some speculate that Lafreniere’s recent performances may be influenced by the Rangers’ changing rhythm on the ice. It’s believed that this, combined with Trocheck’s return, is helping to elevate his game.

When asked if Trocheck’s presence affected his performance, Lafreniere simply stated, “Of course it does,” adding that Trocheck is a vital contributor to the team’s efforts.

Sullivan also highlighted how Trocheck’s style positively affects Lafreniere’s gameplay and skills.

The coach remarked that Trocheck often positions himself well, making subtle yet impactful contributions. His presence aids in establishing counter-attack opportunities that could benefit teammates like Artemi Panarin and others.

Lafreniere’s goal on Monday came right after he broke a 12-game scoreless streak. Throughout much of the season, he’s been active offensively without consistent scoring.

Trocheck’s return has seemingly revitalized Lafreniere’s game, as their combined efforts were reflected in their strong scoring chances, indicating an early sign of improvement for the Rangers.
