Brooklyn Nets Update on Injuries
The Nets are currently managing the extended absence of their main scorer, Cam Thomas. However, there’s some positive news regarding Dayron Sharpe.
Sharpe, who serves as the only backup center to Nick Claxton, left the game on Sunday due to what was initially suspected to be a left hamstring strain. Luckily, it turned out to be a hip contusion, especially given his previous hamstring issues.
It’s worth mentioning that Sharpe missed a significant part of last season’s training camp along with the first 21 games due to a left hamstring strain.
He didn’t participate in the Nets’ 119-109 loss against the Raptors on Tuesday, but he remains optimistic, insisting, “Every day is filled with good news.”
“There’s no concern about the hamstring. It’s a hip contusion, and he’s day-to-day. We’re not worried,” said Jordi Fernandes. “The focus is on ensuring he feels good mentally as well. It’s all positive, and this gives the next guy a chance.”
Speaking of the next guy, rookie Danny Wolfe was called up from the G League. Instead of using Wolfe as Claxton’s backup, Fernandes opted to play Noah Clowney for over 34 minutes. Clowney ended the game with 18 points and eight rebounds.
“Noah has gained some experience, and opportunities arise for everyone. My choice was to play him,” noted Fernandes. “I’ve known Noah for a while, which influenced my decision.”
Wolfe, however, spent only 2 minutes and 10 seconds on the court during his second NBA appearance.
On another note, Ziaire Williams is facing a slump. He finished Tuesday’s game with just two points on 0-of-8 shooting, including missing all seven of his three-point attempts.
Williams has only been averaging 6 points with a shooting rate of 7-of-30 over his last four games, and his defensive skills are also lacking.
“If he can bring his defensive intensity like he did last season—good pressure on the ball, making deflections—then the shooting will follow,” said Fernandes. “I understand emotions can get involved, but missing shots shouldn’t impact your defense. That’s where I challenge him.”
Fernandes praised Claxton’s improved playmaking skills, describing them as “elite” but emphasized the need for him to enhance his performance in defensive rebounding.
Claxton only managed four defensive rebounds in the latest game. “I definitely need to improve. I’m averaging about seven or eight rebounds, but I can step it up. The team’s performance in that area has been a struggle,” Claxton acknowledged. “We’ve discussed it, and improving will help us navigate through this transition.”
The Nets also held a moment of silence in remembrance of former All-Star Michael Ray Richardson, who sadly passed away at the age of 70.
In a lighter moment, the team celebrated Biggie Night, honoring the renowned rapper by distributing bobbleheads and unveiling a life-size statue that plays music during halftime.
Lastly, Matt Ricciardi, a former Nets executive, has been named co-interim GM alongside Michael Finley for the Dallas team.
