Capitals Secure Hard-Fought Win Against Hurricanes
The Washington Capitals managed to clinch a tense 4-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night. This win was highlighted by Jacob Chychurn’s 100th career goal, as well as an empty-net goal from Alex Ovechkin.
But it wasn’t smooth sailing for Washington.
A skirmish erupted between the teams late in the first period. Capitals center Nick Dowd collided with Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen behind the net, which prompted Carolina players to rush in to defend their teammate. This led to several scrums on the ice, resulting in an 18-minute penalty, contributing to a combined total of 22 minutes in penalties during the first period.
After the ruckus, the game settled down. Dylan Strome scored his fifth goal of the season, putting Washington up 2-0. Carolina managed to respond with a goal from Nikolaj Ehlers, but that would be their only score of the night in Raleigh.
Chychurn netted his milestone goal in the third period, and Ovechkin followed shortly after. “It was a well-matched game,” Capitals head coach Spencer Carberry reflected after the game. “The first period was solid. We really need to start like this in this arena.”
As the game neared its end, Andersen was inadvertently injured in a collision with teammate Jordan Staal and had to leave the game.
Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson had a strong performance, stopping 30 out of 31 shots throughout the match.
With this win, Washington moved to a record of 8-7-1, while Carolina’s streak ended at four, dropping them to 11-5.
