Chicago Mayor’s Criticism Sparks DHS Response

After Mayor Brandon Johnson of Chicago publicly criticized Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino regarding Operation Midway Blitz—a recent immigration raid in the city—the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) pushed back. They suggested that Democrats should focus more on the dangers posed to Chicagoans by illegal immigrants involved in gang activities and drug trafficking.

During a press conference, Johnson seemed to equate Bovino’s actions to terrorism, claiming that Bovino instills fear in the community. He condemned the immigration raid and the way it was disseminated on federal social media, likening it to “grotesque” historical acts of racism, including lynchings and anti-racism protests from the previous century.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin responded to Johnson’s remarks, pointing out that law enforcement has experienced a staggering increase in assaults and death threats. “Mayor Brandon Johnson is once again demonizing ICE,” McLaughlin said, highlighting a more than 1,000% rise in assaults and an over 8,000% rise in death threats against federal agents.

McLaughlin also noted that Johnson seems oblivious to the dangers posed to innocent Americans by gang members, murderers, and drug traffickers who shouldn’t be in the country at all.

Amidst this tension, a reporter joked about Bovino’s team taking photos at Chicago’s iconic Bean sculpture, while another quipped about an agent’s language in a predominantly Hispanic area. Johnson didn’t take this lightly, suggesting that Bovino should “just leave.”

“This is someone who has caused fear in people,” Johnson remarked, also criticizing Bovino’s calm demeanor while facing hostile protesters outside a federal courthouse. Protesters hurled insults at Bovino, demonstrating the heated atmosphere surrounding the operation.

Johnson described a photo of Bovino at the Bean as “evil and despicable.” In a swift rebuttal, DHS shared images of apprehended violent illegal immigrants, suggesting the real “evil and despicable” actions stem from them, not from law enforcement.

Mayer’s Remarks Spark Broader Concerns

In a broader commentary on the situation, Johnson expressed his thoughts on the troubling historical behavior of humans, suggesting that what’s happening now parallels some dark chapters in history. He criticized Bovino’s overt public displays of authority, like saluting in the streets, which he saw as inappropriate amidst the current climate.

Johnson also linked the incident to former political figures who resisted desegregation, suggesting that the actions of Bovino and the Border Patrol echo similarly dehumanizing practices from the past. He voiced his concerns over the ongoing violence and injustice, drawing connections to modern-day issues in America.
