Michelle Obama Opens Up About 2009 Bermuda Shorts Controversy
In a recent episode of her podcast, Michelle Obama shared her frustrations from 2009 about the debate surrounding her choice to wear Bermuda shorts while vacationing on Air Force One, revealing it left her feeling quite angry. “It’s really upsetting that we had to think about these things when my husband didn’t have to at all,” she remarked during a conversation on “IMO With Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson,” the podcast she co-hosts with her brother.
Michelle recalled that, during her first vacation as First Lady, she grappled with the decision of what to wear for a planned hike at the Grand Canyon. While she was concerned about public perception and the expectations of a First Lady, her husband, Barack Obama, seemed unfazed, simply deciding on sneakers and rolling up his sleeves. “It was 100 degrees,” she noted, questioning his outfit choice, but he responded nonchalantly about being comfortable.
Michelle said she considered various options, such as hiking pants or a dress, ultimately deciding on Bermuda shorts. “Hiking shorts felt too casual, and a dress would be odd for hiking,” she explained. “People would probably think I was un-American if I showed up at the Grand Canyon in flats and a tea-length dress,” she added with a chuckle.
Her choice of shorts, which she felt was true to herself and practical for hiking, sparked significant media backlash. Headlines at the time included criticisms like “Who wears shorts? Michelle Obama” and “the shorts heard around the world.”
Reflecting on that moment, Michelle revealed that she would avoid wearing shorts on Air Force One in the future, especially after the criticism made it feel like a “terrible stench.” She mentioned she opted for a more relaxed style because it was vacation.
Interestingly, Melania Trump faced her own wardrobe scrutiny, such as wearing a baseball cap during a trip to Texas post-Hurricane Harvey, which some considered inappropriate, and she also drew criticism for a jacket she wore that read, “I really don’t care. What about you?” during a trip to the border.
As discussions about fashion and portrayal in the public eye continue, Michelle Obama’s reflections highlight the often unreasonable expectations placed on women, particularly in high-profile roles. Fox News Digital reached out for further comments but had not received a response.
