Condé Nast Faces Backlash Over Recent Employee Firings

The New York News Guild is expressing significant anger towards Condé Nast, alleging that the company engaged in “retaliatory” firings after four employees were let go for verbally confronting higher-ups.

Last week, a group of Condé Nast workers approached human resources director Stan Duncan outside the executive offices at 1 World Trade Center, demanding clarification about recent job cuts affecting WIRED and Teen Vogue. Duncan’s response reportedly involved dismissing their concerns, urging the employees to return to their tasks.

New York News Guild President Susan DeCarava characterized his actions as shutting the door on them, both literally and metaphorically.

Video footage of the encounter led to the firing of four involved employees, sparking widespread attention online. The clip has garnered over four million views on social media.

Among those let go were Bon Appétit digital producer Alma Avalle, a trans activist and News Guild leader, along with other prominent staff like Wired’s senior White House correspondent Jake LaFoot and The New Yorker’s senior fact checker Jasper Law. DeCarava labeled these dismissals a “grossly illegal tactic” for undermining union activities.

DeCarava emphasized that the firings occurred without proper justification, violating the existing contract that necessitates specific procedures before termination. Interestingly, other employees with conflicts with Duncan received suspensions rather than firings, which raises questions about consistency in disciplinary measures.

“It’s essential for employers to recognize the current climate surrounding press freedom and independent journalism,” DeCarava added. “Ignoring our collective bargaining agreements is not the solution.” She posed a rhetorical question: how can a media company exist without addressing employee concerns?

Condé Nast officially stated that the terminations were justified due to misconduct that went against company policy, rejecting any connection to the political climate under the Trump administration.

The News Guild is planning a rally at Condé Nast’s headquarters to demand the reinstatement of the terminated employees, who are often referred to as “the fired four.” DeCarava called attention to the rights of these individuals under federal labor law and asserted their entitlement to speak out.

Some industry analysts have expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of such direct confrontations with executives. For instance, Mark Hemingway critiqued the actions in the video, deeming them disrespectful and indicating that the firings were an expected outcome.

The layoffs that triggered the outrage initially involved a shift for Teen Vogue to become part of Vogue.com, leading to significant job losses, particularly impacting workers from marginalized communities.

DeCarava noted that the workforce reductions include a disproportionate number of BIPOC and LGBTQ employees, raising alarms about systemic biases within the company. Currently, only one woman of color remains on Teen Vogue’s editorial team, highlighting ongoing diversity issues.

Amid the heated dialogue, DeCarava remarked that management’s response seemed overly reactionary and retaliatory, indicating a breakdown in trust between employees and leadership.

On Monday, Condé Nast communicated with its staff, asserting that they were addressing questions from union representatives at the time of the protests. The company cited adherence to policies around workplace behavior as the basis for their disciplinary actions against the employees involved.

Both Condé Nast and the News Guild have registered unfair labor practice charges against each other, with indications that this isn’t the first complaint regarding employee conduct this year. A Condé Nast insider mentioned that parts of the viral video are missing key moments from the incident.
