Dallas Mavericks Shuffle Management After Recent Struggles
An internal position has opened up within the Dallas Mavericks organization.
On Tuesday, the team’s governor, Patrick Dumont, made a tough but necessary decision, announcing that general manager Nico Harrison has been dismissed. This comes just nine months after he executed the shocking trade sending superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.
“This decision reflects our continued commitment to building a championship-caliber organization,” Dumont stated. “It serves our players, our partners, and, most importantly, our fans.”
It seems that signing Doncic may have had lasting negative effects. Harrison inherited a team in significant disarray—injuries plaguing the roster, an offense that ranked worst in the conference, and a disappointing 3-8 record, placing them 14th in the Western standings.
Now, the big question is: who will step in to rectify this situation?
Michael Finlay and Matt Ricciardi will serve on an interim basis. According to Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix, there’s a possibility that Mavs head coach Jason Kidd could be promoted to a front office position.
Mannix emphasized that Kidd remains in “good standing” with both ownership and the fan base, noting his history as a championship player and a successful coach guiding the Mavs to the NBA Finals.
He further commented, “Kidd’s hands are clean in the Doncic signing,” and noted that no one can blame him for the struggles stemming from an injury-afflicted roster.
But will Kidd actually want the job? That’s still up for debate.
Mannix suggests the possibility, saying, “Kidd had been asked for input on personnel decisions in the past, and while he’s found his footing as a coach in Dallas, some restructuring seems necessary.” It would probably be preferable to have oversight from a higher management level rather than solely from the coaching staff.
Interestingly, there’s also speculation that if Kidd is promoted, it could open up the opportunity for Dirk Nowitzki to return to a significant leadership role within the team.
As Kidd transitions into potentially a new position, it’s unclear how he will adapt to an executive role. Still, his popularity among fans might just bring some hope back to a franchise that really could use it right now.
