Louisville basketball coach experiences unusual finger injury

Louisville’s Coach Pat Kelce Faces Postgame Challenge

Sometimes victory doesn’t come easy. After the Louisville Cardinals triumphed over the Kentucky Wildcats, head coach Pat Kelce found it tough to dodge the celebratory chaos that erupted in the arena.

In a thrilling matchup, the 12th-ranked Cardinals took down the 9th-ranked Wildcats with a score of 96-88 at KFC Yum! Center. As Kelce made his way to the media area postgame, he awkwardly adjusted his right middle finger, which had been splinted due to an unfortunate incident while maneuvering through the crowd.

“I’m 50 now and I’ve still got some moves,” he joked. He explained that a curtain had split the court, and in his excitement, he attempted to burst through it but ended up catching his finger. Ouch.

In a separate game, Illinois faced off against Texas Tech, with JT Toppin showcasing a remarkable performance, scoring 35 points despite his team’s loss.

Kelce revealed that his finger was nearly at a right angle, but he wasn’t sure if it was broken. Fortunately, a team doctor was there to help realign it. “All the adrenaline from the game was rushing through me, so I didn’t even feel it,” he added.

This win against Kentucky stands out as one of the biggest for Louisville in years. Kelce took over the head coaching role after a challenging season in which the Cardinals recorded just eight wins and twenty-four losses under his predecessor. But in the past season, they rebounded nicely, going 27-8 and making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2019.

Before this victory, Louisville had lost 14 out of 17 encounters against Kentucky. It’s a significant turnaround, showing the impact of Kelce’s leadership.
