FBI Detains Ex-Chief Of Staff for California Governor Gavin Newsom

Arrest of Former California Chief of Staff

Dana Williamson, who previously served as chief of staff to California Governor Gavin Newsom, was arrested on Wednesday. She’s facing charges that include conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California.

A 23-count indictment was announced, with the seal lifted following her arrest. This legal action stems from accusations of filing false tax returns, making misleading statements, as well as engaging in bank and wire fraud. Additionally, Williamson is implicated in a conspiracy aimed at defrauding the United States and obstructing justice.

U.S. Attorney Eric Grant described the charges as a significant development in what has been a three-year investigation into political corruption. He emphasized ongoing efforts to safeguard Californians from such activities.

Documents from the court indicate that between February 2022 and September 2024, Williamson allegedly conspired with others to misappropriate about $225,000 from political activities for personal gains. Prosecutors claim that the funds were funneled through various entities, masking them as payments for nonexistent work.

Williamson was at the helm of Newsom’s office from 2022 until her resignation in December 2024, when Nathan Barankin took over her role. This transition occurred amid discussions regarding Newsom’s aspirations in politics.

Also noted, the 53-year-old political consultant is said to have collaborated with business associates to generate fake backdated contracts following a subpoena from the U.S. Department of Justice in January 2024 concerning Paycheck Protection Program loans related to his business. Moreover, Williamson is accused of falsely claiming over $1 million in business deductions for personal expenses, which included luxury hotel stays, furniture purchases, and private jet travel.

Williamson’s first court appearance is set for Wednesday at 2 PM local time.
