Bernie Kosar Faces Health Challenges After Surgeries
Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar is dealing with significant health struggles. Recently, he revealed that he had undergone “two active procedures” to treat internal bleeding.
While he is still in need of a liver transplant, that procedure has been delayed, and Kosar has another surgery lined up. He explained in a video that the postponement was due to an infection affecting the donor organ. At 61 years old, he is now looking for support during this challenging time.
“Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. I’m currently in the hospital, but I’m staying strong,” Kosar shared in a post on social media.
The Browns organization responded, saying, “Bernie, you’re in our thoughts and prayers. We love you and are with you every step of the way. If anyone can emerge stronger from this, it’s you.”
Sitting in a hospital bed, Kosar expressed gratitude for the love and encouragement he has received. He also reflected on Veterans Day, emphasizing the importance of helping others, particularly those in more dire circumstances than his own. He mentioned how he was able to support veterans and first responders, which brought him a sense of pride despite his own struggles.
In a further update, Kosar stated that his recent surgery had gone well. “I’m just hoping for my liver to recover,” he remarked.
Messages of support have poured in from former teammates, like Ernest Byner, who expressed his admiration and love for Kosar, urging him to keep fighting and remain hopeful.
In 2024, Kosar publicly shared that he had been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson’s disease. He’s been added to the liver transplant list, and doctors have observed some signs of improvement since his diagnosis.
Kosar started his professional career with the Browns back in 1985, spending nine seasons with the team and achieving remarkable milestones along the way—he still stands as the third all-time passer for the franchise.
