NBCUniversal Revives NBC Sports Network After Four Years

NBCUniversal is set to bring back the NBC Sports Network next week after a four-year hiatus following its shutdown. This revived channel will be available exclusively on YouTube TV initially, coinciding with ongoing disruptions on Disney’s platform.

The 24/7 sports channel will launch on Monday and will gradually expand to platforms like Xfinity and others. NBCUniversal made this announcement on Thursday.

The original NBCSN closed its doors in December 2021, redistributing its programming to networks like USA Network, CNBC, and Peacock.

Reports about the network’s return first surfaced from major news outlets. NBCUniversal indicated that the revived NBCSN will air live NBA games, Premier League soccer, Big Ten football, WNBA matchups, and major golf events.

Moreover, MLB games are also expected to be part of the lineup under an upcoming agreement.

Meanwhile, Disney-owned ESPN and ABC have seen around 10 million subscribers cut off from YouTube TV since late October.

The ongoing dispute between Disney and Google, the owner of YouTube, revolves around pricing. Disney aims to increase rates, while Google is pushing for programming adjustments that would allow subscribers to eliminate some channels.

Analysts estimate that this blackout is costing Disney roughly $30 million weekly, which equates to about $4.3 million daily. This outage has also negatively impacted the ratings of ABC.

As of now, there hasn’t been any news regarding a resolution between Disney and Google.

Disney CFO Hugh Johnston mentioned that the company is prepared for the blackout to last longer than anticipated, stating, “We’re ready to continue as long as they want.”

In the meantime, the return of NBCSN strategically coincides with the intensifying NBA season and the finale of college football.

NBCSN is slated to showcase daily Olympic coverage during the 2026 Winter Olympics, including a segment called “Gold Zone,” which will be hosted by Scott Hanson. The channel will also cover events like the Tour de France and major horse racing events such as the Kentucky Derby.

The programming lineup will also feature sports talk shows, including “PFT Live,” “The Dan Patrick Show,” “The Dan Le Batard Show,” and “Matthew Berry’s Fantasy Football Happy Hour.”

Historically, during its initial operations, NBCSN gained recognition for its coverage of NHL, NASCAR, and cycling events.

These days, networks like ESPN have taken over the rights to NHL games, while NASCAR remains on the USA Network and is not returning to NBCSN.

The new NBCSN is designed to deliver exclusive content from Peacock to traditional television, including Monday night NBA broadcasts. Many shows will continue to be available on Peacock as well.

Previously, NBCSN was the second most-watched cable sports network in the U.S. by 2020 before its closure at the end of 2021.

The revival of the network is timely, as NBCUniversal is also preparing to spin off a significant portion of its cable channels into a new entity named Versant.

This spinoff will likely include channels such as CNBC, MSNBC, and USA Network, while Bravo will remain with NBCUniversal.

Specific financial details surrounding the NBCSN and YouTube TV agreement have not been disclosed.

Matt Schnarz, president of platform distribution and partnerships at NBCUniversal, expressed optimism, stating, “NBCUniversal delivers the best moments in sports, and the new NBC Sports Network will provide pay-TV customers an effortless way to access the diverse range of sports we offer.”
