Sophie Winkleman Reflects on Royal Life

Sophie Winkleman, known as Lady Frederick Windsor, isn’t keen on the idea of living like royals.

In a recent interview, Winkleman, who is married to Lord Frederick Windsor—Prince Michael of Kent’s son and a cousin to the late Queen Elizabeth II—shared her thoughts on the pressures faced by senior royals. “The more you learn about the royal family, the more you realize that their lives are absolute hell and that level of unsolicited fame is a form of torture,” the 45-year-old actress stated.

She continued, “No one becomes famous simply as a ‘Pop Idol’ or anything like that. It’s pretty cruel to be thrust into the spotlight from birth, constantly wondering who you can trust, if someone might betray you, or dealing with a stream of falsehoods about yourself.”

Winkleman expressed concern for the royals, saying, “I feel for all of them. It doesn’t seem healthy to endure such scrutiny and pressure, but they don’t have any options.”

Before marrying into royalty, Winkleman was an actress known for roles in British sitcoms like “Peep Show” and “Two and a Half Men.” She tied the knot with Lord Frederick Windsor on September 12, 2009, at Hampton Court Palace in London.

Winkleman commented on her wedding, saying, “I didn’t know anyone at my wedding. There were about 400 people. Sure, I had some close friends there, but honestly, the majority were unfamiliar faces.”

After their wedding, they relocated to Los Angeles for seven years before settling down in Battersea, London, following the birth of their eldest daughter, Maud, now 12. They also have a nine-year-old daughter, Isabella. Reflecting on their current home, she said, “It’s very cute, but it’s not close to a subway or good schools, so I’m not sure I’d choose it again.”

Winkleman previously mentioned the quick transition after their wedding, saying, “I had a flight to Los Angeles the next day, so I was in a daze. We got married on a Saturday, and the following day, we packed up our lives for America. My focus was on work, not the wedding.”

Despite the challenges, she expressed affection for her husband’s family, stating, “Families can be tricky, but this family is genuinely sweet. I love them all.”
