Katie Wilson, a socialist, triumphs in the Seattle mayoral election.

Katie Wilson, who describes herself as a socialist, is set to become Seattle’s next mayor at the age of 43, even while still receiving financial help from her parents in New York. She will be in charge of a nearly $9 billion budget.

Her campaign drew comparisons to that of Zoran Mamdani, another Democratic Socialist in New York City, who recently took the lead against the current mayor, Bruce Harrell.

Unlike the New York election, which was quite contentious, Seattle’s results were clearer, as Wilson managed to secure enough votes to avoid a recount.

“This campaign was driven by a deep belief that we need to expand the table to include everyone in the decisions that affect their lives,” Wilson expressed in her victory speech. “That’s what we will strive for every day as we begin this new administration.”

To win, Wilson promoted progressive ideas like municipal grocery stores and tax increases for the wealthy. She has also made it clear she’ll take a stance against Trump.

“Yes, I’m a socialist,” Wilson remarked earlier this year. “But I’m not waving the socialist flag. I don’t know if that label will help me in the general election, but I’m okay with being called a socialist.”

After moving to Seattle with her husband in her twenties, Wilson acknowledged last month that she relies on her parents—both professors in New York—for child support, which helps cover the $2,200 monthly cost for her 2-year-old’s childcare.

She also revealed she left college just six weeks before graduation but graduated debt-free, aided by her parents’ financial support, as noted in another article. Interestingly, she studied at Oxford University in England.

Now, Wilson will oversee 41 departments as she steps into the leadership role of a major U.S. city. The city’s budget is projected to be close to $9 billion.

Her win contributed to a shift in the city’s political landscape, leading to the ousting of several incumbents, including the mayor, city council president, and city attorney, all in favor of leftist candidates.

While Harrell has yet to officially announce his candidacy, he is scheduled to address the city on Thursday. Though he lost by a margin that wouldn’t normally trigger an automatic recount, his team is still considering requesting one.

This Seattle election marks the second win for the Socialist Party this month, following Mamdani’s recent victory in New York City.
