Colombian President Criticizes Trump Amid Intelligence Sharing Dispute

Colombian President Gustavo Petro recently referred to former President Donald Trump as a “savage.” This comment followed Washington’s directive ordering Colombian security forces to halt intelligence sharing with the U.S. until the latter stops its strikes on drug-smuggling vessels in the Caribbean.

In an interview published on Thursday, Petro expressed that he would not share information, stating that doing so would equate to cooperating with “crimes against humanity.” This statement was reported in various outlets, including NBC News.

A spokesperson for the White House reiterated to Fox News Digital that Trump characterized Petro as an “illegal drug leader” who is actively promoting mass drug production, despite significant U.S. financial support meant to combat this issue.

The official emphasized that Trump made these decisions under his constitutional authority to oversee foreign relations and ensure the safety of Americans.

U.S. Drug Crackdown Continues

Furthering the debate, the White House official noted that despite billions invested in Colombia’s anti-drug initiatives, cartels are prospering due to Petro’s ineffective policies. They implied that Petro’s opposition to Trump’s strategies to curtail drug flow into the U.S. is not surprising.

Petro articulated his stance on social media earlier in the week, calling for an end to “communications and other agreements with U.S. security services” until the attacks on suspected drug-laden speedboats cease. He asserted that the war on drugs should respect the human rights of Caribbean communities.

Clarifications from Secretary of State

On Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed reports claiming that Britain had also ceased sharing intelligence with the U.S. following the recent drug vessel attack. Rubio indicated that he had not received any direct concerns from Britain.

He reiterated that the ongoing operations are essential to protect the U.S., adding that action could be halted if drug shipments were stopped. During the discussion, he described the Maduro regime in Venezuela as a “narco-terror regime” that facilitates organized crime.

As tensions rise, the international community watches closely, especially given the implications on U.S. foreign policy and its approach to drug trafficking in the region.
