Bonuses for TSA Employees after Government Shutdown
On Thursday, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem distributed $10,000 bonus checks to over 20 TSA employees at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport. This initiative follows President Donald Trump’s promise to reward air traffic controllers who worked without pay during the government shutdown.
According to NBC News, many TSA employees will receive bonuses, particularly those recognized for their commitment during the unprecedented 43-day shutdown. Trump had initially suggested these bonuses on Truth Social, stating that air traffic controllers who continued working should receive financial recognition for their service, while also urging airport workers to return to their jobs promptly.
Noem emphasized the remarkable dedication of TSA officers at a press conference, stating, “They went above and beyond. They helped individuals. They provided extra shifts. They helped transport people to and from work.” Her department manages the TSA, and it appears they are acknowledging the hard work of their employees during this challenging time.
Late Wednesday, President Trump approved an emergency funding bill, effectively reopening federal agencies and allowing them to operate normally until January 30th. White House Economic Advisor Kevin Hassett indicated that federal workers who were furloughed should expect to see their due payments in their bank accounts shortly.
Despite the government reopening, delays in air travel are still anticipated. Airlines for America warned that the repercussions of the shutdown would linger for several days, with complete flight schedules expected to resume by Monday. Currently, aviation restrictions remain at a reduced 6%, an improvement from earlier forecasts of a 10% limitation.
In an interview, Trump mentioned he would distribute bonus checks to air traffic controllers soon, reinforcing his commitment to those who remained dedicated during the shutdown. However, when asked about the source of the funding, he admitted he wasn’t entirely sure but expressed confidence that he would find the means.
