California Woman Charged Over Turning Point USA Protest

A woman from California faces charges for her involvement in a protest at a Turning Point USA event on a college campus earlier this year, which gained significant media attention due to violent confrontations between protesters and conservative speakers.

Joanna Clara Sodke, 22, reportedly took part in a disruption at the University of California, Davis, on April 3, during an event featuring commentator Brandon Tatum. The event was titled “Prove me Wrong” and was marred by chaos where protesters allegedly damaged equipment, ripped down signage, overturned tables, and assaulted staff members.

Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated earlier this year on a college campus in Utah, highlighted the nationwide unrest surrounding such events. In this context, Sodke has been charged with conspiracy to commit riot and misdemeanor riot charges.

Her arraignment is set for Friday in Yolo Superior Court, according to a statement from the Yolo County District Attorney’s office. As a point of interest, Sodke is expected to graduate from UC Davis in 2024 with a degree in history. Video clips from the event revealed masked protesters pulling down tents and pushing organizers around.

Just days ago, another protest erupted at a TPUSA gathering on the Berkeley campus, leading to the arrest of four students for felony property damage. This incident reignited discussions on free speech in college environments, especially regarding conservative viewpoints.

In light of these developments, UC Berkeley issued a statement condemning violence and intimidation that disrupts lawful expression, emphasizing their commitment to fully cooperate with investigations into the disturbances.
