John Tortorella Honors Larry Brooks Following His Passing

Former Rangers head coach John Tortorella referred to Larry Brooks as an “icon” and lamented his death as a “huge loss” during a tribute to the longstanding hockey writer and Hall of Famer.

Brooks passed away at 75 on Thursday morning, following a brief battle with cancer.

Tortorella shared a close bond with Brooks during the five seasons they spent together when Brooks was coaching the Rangers. However, his admiration for the columnist stretches back even further.

“He’s an icon,” Tortorella remarked on Thursday night while speaking on ESPN’s “The Point.”

“We certainly had our disagreements, but I always respected Larry. No matter how a day went, we would have numerous disagreements, yet he was there the next day, ready to ask more questions, engaged in person.”

Tortorella added that he respected the diligence Brooks exhibited in his role, highlighting the challenging balance they both navigated in their jobs. “I have to look out for the hockey team, but Larry, he had valuable information, and he worked hard to get it.”

He continued by stating that their interactions weren’t personal and referred to Brooks as a “coworker.”

Tortorella noted that he had heard about Brooks’ health a few days prior and made a point to reach out. He even spoke to Brooks’ son, Jordon, who expressed that the call was significant to his father.

“What we need to remember is that this is not just a story for sensationalism. This was a man, and he deserves our respect,” Tortorella emphasized.

Tortorella reminisced about their dynamic and how their exchanges may have solidified their relationship. “He wasn’t fearful and always expressed his opinions. How can you not respect that?” he said.

ESPN host Steve Levy also shared his praise for Brooks, noting that the accolades being shared were typically reserved for superstar athletes, not simply those who report on them.

Throughout Thursday, tributes for Brooks poured in from dedicated readers, athletes, and key figures within the NHL.
