Fire Devastates Historic Long Island Family Farm

A significant fire erupted at the Wells Farm in Northville, Long Island, leading to the destruction of the primary barn and injuries to several individuals who attempted to rescue farm animals, according to police reports.

This tragic incident resulted in the death of numerous animals and required the efforts of six fire departments alongside the Riverhead Police Department Wednesday evening.

Laura Wells, whose husband and son manage the daily operations of the farm, expressed her family’s heartbreak over the rapid loss of their barn, which was a large wooden structure. She shared her uncertainty about how they would recover from this disaster.

“This is truly devastating,” she remarked, highlighting her emotional turmoil. “Honestly, I’m unsure what we’re going to do.”

Wells recounted how emergency responders and family members rushed into the flames, managing to save 19 pigs, though two other pigs perished, along with a large number of chickens that couldn’t be reached in time.

“My two granddaughters ended up in the hospital trying to save the pig,” Wells added, emphasizing their bravery. “Thank you to the police and firefighters. They helped us get the pigs out of there.”

According to police, an officer and Wells’ granddaughters received treatment for smoke inhalation at the scene before being transferred to Peconic Bay Medical Center.

Humane Long Island, an organization focused on animal welfare, was called in to assess the animals that survived, revealing many with burns, cuts, and smoke exposure.

While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, authorities have indicated that arson is unlikely.
