Janta Power secures $5.5M for new vertical solar tower technology

Janta Power, a Texas-based startup, has recently secured $5.5 million in seed funding aimed at developing its innovative vertical solar power towers as alternatives to traditional flat solar farms. The funding, primarily led by MaC Venture Capital with backing from Collab Capital, showcases a strong belief in the effectiveness of 3D solar systems that could potentially transform renewable energy on a global scale.

Why flat solar panels are not enough

Conventional solar panels require expansive flat areas, like rooftops or empty lots, leading to significant land use and only capturing sunlight effectively when it’s directly overhead. This results in a lot of missed sunlight as the sun’s position changes throughout the day.

In contrast, Janta Power’s design employs rotating solar towers that stack panels vertically, forming a compact structure that maximizes sunlight capture throughout the day. It’s like having a skyscraper for solar energy—generating more power while occupying less land.

How Janta’s solar tower works

Each tower is equipped with intelligent tracking software, which follows the sun’s path from dawn to dusk. This functionality enables the towers to harness more sunlight than static panels by continually adjusting their position. Consequently, the towers produce about 50% more energy while using only a third of the space that flat panel systems require.

The vertical design also allows these towers to capture sunlight during the earlier and later hours of the day, when flat panels are least productive. This translation into reliable power generation throughout the day eases pressure on the power grid, reducing the need for backup power sources.

Stronger, smarter, more efficient

Additionally, Janta’s towers prioritize durability; each can withstand winds up to 270 miles per hour. Their robust steel design and modular foundations facilitate easier installation across diverse locations.

Current pilot programs are already in place at notable locations like Munich International Airport and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, as well as facilities managed by Aena, which oversees more than 70 airports worldwide.

Transforming the energy economy

The unique 3D structure offers a capacity factor around 32% at each site, significantly higher than the 22% typically seen with flat panels. This greater efficiency leads to a decrease in the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) to about $0.05 per kilowatt-hour, dipping below the global average of $0.15.

This reduction makes renewable energy more accessible for various industries, including data centers, educational institutions, and telecommunications, all of which require stable and dependable energy sources.
