A grieving mother shared her heartbreak after her five-year-old son was allegedly struck and killed by his grandmother, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, while driving. This tragedy unfolded in Slidell, Louisiana, as little Carson Lawson awaited his school bus around 7 a.m. on Tuesday.
“There aren’t really words that can capture this immense sadness in my heart,” said Abi Combs, Carson’s mother. She posted a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, accompanied by over a dozen photos of her smiling son.
“His unexpected death has been the most shocking and devastating scenario I’ve ever faced,” she expressed, emphasizing her devastation.
While she barely touched on the details surrounding her son’s death or the arrest of his grandmother, Kristen Anders, who is 55, police have stated that Anders was impaired by both alcohol and sedatives at the time of the incident. She was taken into custody on-site and charged with vehicular homicide.
In her tribute, Combs wrote, “Carson knew how much we loved him.” Reflecting on her loss, she added, “I will never be the same. I’m asking for privacy as I navigate this unimaginable grief.”
Struggling with offers of support, she mentioned, “When people ask if I need anything, I honestly don’t know how to respond, but I appreciate the thought. Honestly, I don’t even know what to do or what comes next.”
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident. Slidell’s Police Chief Daniel Suznow described the situation as the “worst nightmare” for any parent. He remarked, “It is safe to say that no one believes the grandmother was aware that there was a child in front of her vehicle.” He also highlighted the dual tragedy facing the family: losing a beloved child while also grappling with the arrest of a family member.
