Former Jets players criticize Aaron Glenn for the Justin Fields situation

Criticism of Jets’ Handling of Justin Fields

Former Jets players are calling out their old team, particularly head coach Aaron Glenn, for how they’re managing quarterback Justin Fields. After another tough performance in a disappointing season—specifically in a 24-14 loss to the Patriots—Fields is drawing some harsh words from ex-linemen like Willie Colon and Damian Woody.

Colon didn’t hold back during an appearance on SNY’s postgame show, mentioning that Fields’ stats, which included just 116 passing yards, were alarming. “I mean, does Glenn really need to review any tape? Let’s face it—Justin Fields isn’t performing as an NFL quarterback,” he stated bluntly.

He expressed concern over the team’s morale, commenting on a need for players to feel motivated. “In the second half, he probably shouldn’t have been out there at all. I mean, with the defense playing like they did, could they have rallied? Yeah, they might have started believing in themselves,” Colon noted.

The Jets find themselves in a situation where they once saw Fields’ potential, but that hasn’t translated to on-field success. The Bears and Steelers both opted to move on from him for similar reasons, and the Jets might have followed suit if Tyrod Taylor hadn’t gotten injured before a key game. But now, they’re left questioning their choices.

It’s a tough pill to swallow for fans and players alike. Fields struggled with his passing game, completing 15 of 26 attempts for one touchdown while also adding a rushing touchdown. Yet, the numbers tell a bleak story: he’s failed to exceed 120 passing yards in five of his nine starts.

Adding to the difficulties, the team has been missing a second receiver for the season. Star player Garrett Wilson was absent for this game due to a knee issue, further hampering their offense. Glenn’s inability to clearly state who his starting quarterback was, let alone offer constructive feedback, hasn’t helped matters either.

“There were some positives,” Glenn remarked, but Colon seemed unconvinced. He echoed a sentiment that Glenn’s approach could risk losing the team’s trust. “Come on, AG,” he tweeted, highlighting his frustration.

As for Taylor, while he might not be the solution to all their problems, he could potentially guide the offense more effectively than Fields has. Colon elaborated, likening the situation to a baseball player sitting in the locker room, feeling frustrated about the missed opportunities on the field. “The tape speaks volumes. If you look closely, you’ll see missed throws and poor mechanics. He’s hesitant,” he explained.

By now, it should be clear that something must change, with the upcoming road game against the Ravens looming large. Glenn and his staff will need to decide whether Fields will be given another chance or if a different direction is necessary. The pressure is on.
