Kai Trump steps onto the LPGA stage; Miami coach commends calmness and promise

Kai Trump’s LPGA Debut and Future Plans

Kai Trump made her debut in the LPGA on Thursday at the Annika tournament held at Pelican Golf Club in Bellaire, Florida. This event marks a significant milestone in her pursuit of a long-held dream.

Before focusing on professional golf, she has officially committed to playing for the Miami Hurricanes, joining the freshman class this past week. She’s set to start competing next fall.

“Today was a major milestone for our program and the university, with Kai playing a crucial role. This is something we’ve been working towards for quite a while,” said Jim Gallen, the head coach of Miami women’s golf, in an interview.

President Donald Trump’s granddaughter is sure to attract attention next year for the Hurricanes. Her practice session earlier in the day was filled with media and fans, some drawn by her grandfather’s fame and others by her own YouTube presence. Yet, for Gallen, the decision to recruit her was purely based on her potential in golf.

“We saw her as a promising golf prospect and everything we did was centered around that,” Gallen explained. “While her popularity surged, we had already been keeping an eye on her well before that, recognizing her talent in the sport.” He added that the extra visibility was a bonus for the program, highlighting the importance of growing the game.

Gallen believes that the exposure Kai brings could help elevate not just the golf program but women’s athletics as a whole. He reflected on meeting Caitlin Clark and her impact on women’s basketball and how that contributes positively to collegiate sports.

“If we can attract someone like her to our team, we’re all for it. It enhances our ability to grow the sport,” Gallen noted. “Sure, competing for championships is essential, but expanding our reach and brand is equally important.”

Looking ahead, Gallen is optimistic about Kai’s readiness as she prepares for her time at The U. He emphasized that the pressures she’s already faced on the world stage will benefit her in Division I tournaments, allowing her to thrive under pressure.

Though it wasn’t the best start for Trump in the tournament—she found herself at the bottom of the leaderboard going into Friday—she’s among the youngest competitors. With her family backing her, she can focus on enjoying the game without as much pressure.
