Trump administration to designate Antifa groups as 'foreign terrorist' entities

Trump Administration Labels Antifa Groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations

The Trump administration has officially designated several Antifa groups as foreign terrorist organizations. President Donald Trump made a statement on the matter, stating that in September, Antifa was declared a domestic “terrorist threat,” with accusations that it “explicitly calls for the overthrow of the United States government, law enforcement authorities, and our nation’s legal system.”

In his statement, Trump emphasized, “The United States will continue to use every available means to protect our country from these anti-American, anti-capitalist, anti-Christian terrorist groups.”

The executive order noted that the anarchist group employed “illegal means” to execute a “nationwide campaign of violence and terrorism,” which involved obstructing law enforcement and regularly targeting politicians.

President Trump’s directive called for federal agencies to “investigate, disrupt, and dismantle all illegal activities” associated with Antifa. By designating these groups as foreign terrorist organizations, it creates more enforcement options, such as classifying material support to the group as a federal crime.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that four Antifa-affiliated groups in Europe—Germany’s Antifa Ost, Italy’s Unofficial Anarchist Federation/International Revolutionary Front, and Greece’s Armed Proletarian Justice and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense—will be designated as “Specially Designated Global Terrorists” starting November 20, 2025.

According to the State Department, Antifa Ost has been involved in multiple attacks in Germany against individuals deemed “fascists” or affiliated with “right-wing forces” from 2018 to 2023. Furthermore, the FAI/FRI group has taken responsibility for threats of violence and bomb-related incidents against political and economic entities.

The State Department also mentioned that the Armed Proletarian Justice Corps attempted and succeeded in carrying out an improvised explosive device (IED) attack targeting Greek government facilities. This group had previously claimed responsibility for a bomb planted near police headquarters in Greece.

Additionally, Revolutionary Class Self-Defense has been linked to two IED attacks in Greece.

Rubio further discussed the ideological facets of these groups, noting they promote “revolutionary anarchist or Marxist ideologies,” which include anti-American, anti-capitalist, and anti-Christian sentiments, often justifying violent assaults both domestically and internationally.

Rubio also took to social media, stating, “Today, in recognition of @POTUS’ historic efforts to eliminate Antifa’s campaign of political violence, the State Department is designating four Antifa groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists. The United States will continue to use all available means to protect our nation from these anti-American, anti-capitalist, and anti-Christian terrorist groups.”
