Pope Leo XIV has endorsed the dismissal of claims regarding Jesus appearances in France.

Recent claims about a special visit from Jesus Christ in the French town of Dozule have been dismissed as false. In the 1970s, a Catholic mother named Madeleine Aumont claimed to have encountered Jesus 49 times and stated that He instructed her to erect a gigantic cross in the area.

This proposed Glorious Cross of Dozule was meant to reach over 2,000 feet in height and would require elaborate lighting. There are, however, smaller crosses on display in the town.

A document from the Vatican’s Secretariat for the Doctrine of the Faith, which was backed by Pope Leo XIV, indicated that the grand cross was unnecessary. It emphasized that “the Cross does not need 738 meters of steel or concrete to be recognized.” Instead, it stated that every act of grace and forgiveness stands as a testament.

Dozule, situated in northern France in the Normandy region, had a population of approximately 2,279 in 2022.

Father Patrick Mary Brisco, a Dominican friar based in Rome, noted that while the message from Dozule has intrigued some, it hasn’t been embraced by the wider Church. He mentioned that the Church’s teachings clarify that the cross of Christ is central to faith.

“Pope Leo is focusing on Christ,” he remarked, adding that the Church’s decision serves as a reminder that genuine hope comes from sacraments and the Gospel, not sensational claims.

Father Brisco also commented on how Pope Leo’s endorsement of the declaration exemplifies the Church’s rigorous approach to discerning spiritual matters. He underscored that this process is aimed at purifying faith rather than stifling it, ensuring that belief is grounded in truth rather than personal emotions or hype.

He suggested that Pope Leo is addressing contemporary issues such as science and technology, which reflects his awareness of today’s challenges. Briscoe asserted that maintaining doctrinal clarity safeguards Christian teachings against superstition and misinterpretation.

Overall, the Vatican’s stance aims to protect authentic devotion while keeping the focus squarely on Christ.
