Russian Intelligence Vessel Near Hawaii
The U.S. Coast Guard has recently reported that they discovered a Russian military intelligence ship around 15 miles off the coast of Hawaii. This vessel, identified as the Karelia, was first noticed on October 29, and its presence has raised some eyebrows.
The Coast Guard confirmed on Thursday that the ship was positioned 15 nautical miles south of Oahu. In response to this situation, they dispatched an HC-130 Hercules aircraft along with the Coast Guard Cutter William Hart to keeping an eye on the Russian vessel “in accordance with international law.”
“Acting in accordance with international law, Coast Guard personnel monitor Russian vessel activity near U.S. territorial waters to ensure the maritime safety of U.S. vessels operating in the area and to support U.S. homeland defense efforts,” the Coast Guard stated.
Foreign military vessels can operate beyond the 12-nautical-mile limit of U.S. territorial waters, so the Coast Guard is just doing its job, really.
“The U.S. Coast Guard regularly monitors maritime activities around the Hawaiian Islands and throughout the Pacific Ocean to ensure the safety and security of U.S. territorial waters,” said Col. Matthew Chong, Coast Guard Oceania District Response Officer.
“Working with partners and allies, our crews protect our maritime borders and monitor and respond to foreign military vessel activity near our territorial waters to protect our sovereign interests,” he added.
This encounter with the Russian vessel occurs at a time when tensions between the U.S. and Russia are pretty high, particularly related to the ongoing strife in Ukraine and the lack of meaningful dialogue toward peace.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that any future negotiations must aim for “concrete results,” emphasizing that the aim is to end the war rather than just engage in endless discussions.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin has suggested that Ukraine will need to negotiate eventually, criticizing the Ukrainian government for avoiding meaningful talks, apparently due to its unwillingness to make concessions.
“The Ukrainian side should know that sooner or later it will have to negotiate from a worse position,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, warning that Ukraine’s position will deteriorate over time.
On the flip side, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has requested that Western allies increase pressure on Russia. He’s mentioned that Russia seems to be gearing up for a broader conflict against Europe, which is quite alarming.
Despite the ongoing tensions, Ukraine remains steadfast in refusing to give up any territory in return for peace. They seem to be depending on economic pressure from the West against Russia and are also looking to acquire long-range weapons to target Russian energy infrastructure.
