Fatal Shooting of Gun-Wielding Suspect by NYPD

Surveillance footage captured a dramatic incident in which an NYPD officer shot and killed a man who allegedly threatened to open fire at Mount Sinai Hospital. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Elijah Brown, brandished a gun while strolling down Madison Avenue late Thursday, reportedly telling a warehouse worker he intended to shoot at the hospital.

The footage shows Brown casually walking between East 95th and 96th Streets with a gun in hand. When officers approached him, he suddenly turned and fired, prompting at least one officer to return fire.

After being shot, Brown fell to the sidewalk, and police officers quickly rushed to assist him. He was taken to a hospital in an NYPD vehicle but was later declared dead.

NYPD Chief of Police Philip Rivera stated that Brown’s spree began around 7 p.m. when he pulled a firearm in a residential elevator on Madison Avenue. Rivera described how Brown pointed the gun at another person in the elevator.

Brown continued to threaten the man until they reached the ground floor, prompting the victim to flee to a deli on East 107th Street. Inside the deli, Brown allegedly pointed a gun at employees and warned them he would shoot at the hospital.

After stealing a cell phone from a deli employee, Brown made his way to Mount Sinai Medical Center at 7:08 p.m. He briefly entered the hospital before leaving and placing the gun next to a tree outside.

He re-entered the hospital and confronted an NYPD officer who was working security, behaving erratically and claiming he had a weapon, Rivera said. When the officer tried to escort him away, a brief struggle ensued.

As the officers came outside, they found the firearm on the ground, and an off-duty officer called for backup. This led to the gunfight on Madison Avenue, occurring shortly after several people had disembarked from an MTA bus.

Rivera noted the gravity of the situation: “This could have ended very differently. A person went into multiple places with a gun, threatened others, and then shot at our officers in broad daylight.” He emphasized the unique dangers officers face when confronted with such volatile situations.

According to police, Brown had no prior arrests.
