Seattle Tourist Faces Charges for Attacking Hawaiian Monk Seal
A tourist from Seattle is facing federal charges after reportedly throwing a rock at a Hawaiian monk seal, which has become a symbol of hope for Maui following the Lahaina wildfires.
This incident occurred on a Tuesday when the 37-year-old visitor was seen approaching the endangered seal, known locally as Lani, while it rested by the coastline on Front Street.
Witnesses described a troubling scene. “He picked up a rock about the size of a coconut and hurled it straight at the monk seal’s head,” said Kaylee Schnitze, who filmed the incident. This shocking act has generated considerable outrage among the residents of Maui, especially since Lani has grown to be a local favorite after returning post-wildfires in 2023.
Maui’s mayor, Richard Bissen, expressed his disapproval in a video shared on social platforms, emphasizing that such behavior is unacceptable. “This is not the kind of visitor we want on Maui,” he stated. Bissen highlighted the importance of respecting the island’s cultural environment and wildlife, asserting, “This type of behavior will not be tolerated.”
In a statement from Maui County, officials mentioned that the alleged attack was especially significant to the community. “Since Lani returned after the wildfires, residents and the mayor’s team have deeply cared for her,” the post read.
Hawaiian monk seals are among the world’s most endangered marine mammals and are safeguarded under both the federal Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
Following the incident, the unnamed visitor was questioned and subsequently released after requesting legal representation. The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources has referred the case to federal prosecutors for possible charges under wildlife protection laws.
Authorities have urged anyone witnessing wildlife harassment in Hawaii to report it immediately.
