Seattle Elects Progressive Mayor Amid Comparisons to New York’s Mamdani

Following the recent election of Zoran Mamdani as New York’s socialist mayor, voters in Seattle have now chosen a progressive leader, Katie Wilson, who has drawn comparisons to Mamdani. Wilson, an activist running the Transit Riders Union, narrowly defeated incumbent Democratic Mayor Bruce Harrell, with Harrell conceding after a week of counting votes. Like Mamdani, Wilson identifies as a “democratic socialist.”

In the past, Wilson faced criticism for her support of cutting police funding, proposing a plan that would halve Seattle’s police budget. She has even suggested disbanding the police altogether, as noted in her editorial from June 2020.

In a surprising turn, Wilson later softened her stance on the police during debates, distancing herself from calls to abolish the department when pressed by Harrell.

Before the election, Wilson positioned herself as a staunch opponent of former President Trump, leading to her being likened to Mamdani. She has also proposed ideas like government-run grocery stores, earning backing from Washington’s largest grocery workers’ union. This mirrors some of the proposals seen in Mamdani’s campaign.

Wilson expressed that the residents of Seattle are open to taxing the wealthy, a notion reflecting Mamdani’s platform. Previously, she has worked various jobs—from barista to lab technician—before founding her nonprofit.

Progressive groups that supported Mamdani’s campaign also backed Wilson, indicating a shift in the political landscape.

Wilson acknowledged her parents’ financial support during her campaign, emphasizing the impact of childcare costs on her decision to run for mayor. “My husband and I were juggling our kids,” she explained, pointing out the necessity for affordable daycare.

Affordability has been a key theme in Wilson’s campaign, and she intends to continue advocating for this focus even after taking office. In her inaugural speech, she outlined numerous goals including universal child care, stable housing, and community support.

“I want everyone to have a roof over their head,” she stated, expressing her vision for a city with thriving small businesses and strong worker rights. “I want public housing and a robust economy that ensures everyone has the basics of a dignified life.”
