Long Lines for Gourmet Grocer in New York
“I’m so hungry and so cold,” a young woman said, her teeth chattering as she awaited food in the chilly morning air.
This New Yorker was just one of many who gathered in Tribeca during rush hour, forming long lines that reached around the blocks.
They eagerly anticipated the 11 a.m. opening of Meadow Lane, a gourmet grocery store created by TikTok influencer Sammy Nussdorf at 355 Greenwich Street. Patrons were eyeing items like $15 organic chicken nuggets and $16 bone soup.
The timing of the opening might have seemed off, given the ongoing affordability crisis that has sparked political action in the city and concerns about cuts to SNAP benefits. However, outside the store, a buzz was palpable, demonstrating that demand for extravagant food in New York remains high.
The interior of Meadow Lane, described as more reminiscent of a movie set than a grocery store, features fresh flowers and artfully displayed food. Customers likened their excitement to winning a golden ticket from “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
Inside, the selection was impressive but came with sticker shock: $14 tortilla chips, $12 grapes, and even $625 Siberian caviar. Many of these items could be found elsewhere at lower prices, but shoppers outside were less concerned about bargains. They seemed more willing to spend significant sums—often more than what many people budget for groceries each month.
A customer explained, “We love food so we spend money on it,” underscoring a common sentiment that quality food deserves investment.
Others echoed this thought, noting that even everyday grocery prices have surged in New York. “Everything’s gone up, even milk,” one shopper remarked.
Visitors who attended the grand opening were particularly interested in grab-and-go options, like a $21 chicken salad. Nussdorf, who had documented the store’s journey on TikTok for over a year, attracted a crowd eager to sample his offerings.
His inspiration for Meadow Lane arose after Dean & DeLuca disappeared from the New York retail scene years ago. Comparisons to high-end retailers like Erewhon in Los Angeles surfaced quickly.
Excited customers started lining up as early as 5 a.m., and some received branded hats for their early arrival.
Many who waited voiced curiosity about the food after seeing Nussdorf’s viral content, creating an atmosphere that felt celebratory, likened to “Christmas” or “Coronation Day.”
Once inside, shoppers admired the luxurious layout, reminiscent of a high-end boutique. Shoppers engaged with gourmet options, exuding a sense of elegance usually reserved for luxury products.
One shopper recounted spending over $260 on just a handful of items, praising the freshness and taste of their purchases. Others noted the mixed quality of products they tried, with some delivering on the hype while others fell short.
Despite the high-end feel, Nussdorf emphasized that Meadow Lane strives to cater to all customers. He pointed to affordable coffee and pastries, hoping to transition from a trendy TikTok curiosity to a neighborhood essential.
“It’s really for everyone,” he declared, though perhaps that’s only for those who can afford it.
