Erin Murphy Reflects on Body Image and Social Media

Erin Murphy, the 61-year-old actress known for portraying Tabitha on the classic sitcom “Bewitched,” recently shared a candid selfie that sparked a conversation around beauty standards and social media. Although she never set out to be makeup-free or without procedures, Murphy felt compelled to share her experience as a way to encourage positivity online.

“It felt important,” she said, explaining that as a mom and grandmother, she’s aware of the negative messages often circulating on social media. “People often default to negativity,” Murphy noted, reflecting on comments she received after posting a photo with her twin sister. Some were meant to be compliments, but a few comments stung. “They claimed I only looked good because of cosmetic procedures,” she added.

In an effort to convey a message of self-acceptance, her Instagram caption stated, “This is 61 years old…no plastic surgery, no makeup.” Murphy commented that she had hoped for a different dialogue, emphasizing, “If you’re going to write something, at least write something good.” She expressed frustration at the trend toward negativity online.

While she appreciates cosmetic surgery, Murphy clarified that she doesn’t want to be labeled solely as a natural beauty. “I think it’s complicated,” she said, adding that though she doesn’t currently plan to have a facelift, she hasn’t ruled it out. “There’s no shame in wanting to feel good about yourself,” she affirmed, advocating for a culture where individuals can make choices about their appearance without fear of online criticism.

Humorously, she noted that she loves makeup despite often appearing barefaced these days. “It’s funny how now I end up with a no-makeup face,” she remarked, recalling how she has always enjoyed the transformative power of cosmetics. Murphy described her routine as a “5-minute face,” mixing both affordable and high-end products. She also maintains her skin care regimen with simple items like jojoba oil and occasional facials.

Describing her skincare philosophy, she remarked, “Everyone’s skin is different; it all depends on finding what works for you.” Murphy does use products like Retin-A once a month, citing its effectiveness. “I probably drink more water than most people, and that helps a lot.” Blending her past with her present, she mused about how she was cast in “Bewitched” for her resemblance to Samantha Stevens, the character played by Elizabeth Montgomery.

Now, as a mother of six and grandmother of five, Murphy leads a life that revolves around family. She shared that her workout routine focuses more on being active rather than hitting the gym, stating, “I like to stretch and do a little yoga every morning.” Living near the beach, she enjoys outdoor activities and spending quality time with children, mentioning trips to the zoo.

With the holiday season on the horizon, Murphy reflected on her approach to food. “I’m all about moderation,” she insisted, believing in the joy of holiday treats without succumbing to restrictive diets. She candidly shared that this year would be the first she won’t celebrate Thanksgiving as she has before, but remains open to change as her family evolves.

Topping off her holiday traditions, she cherishes giving festive pajamas to loved ones—an endearing way to create lasting memories together. “I love coming up with new traditions during the holidays,” she said, smiling at the thought.
