Incident at Texas A&M Game
A Texas A&M official was removed from game-day responsibilities on Saturday after an interaction with South Carolina’s Nick Harbaugh following a long touchdown play.
After catching a pass, Harbaugh sprinted 80 yards for a touchdown but then seemed to strain his right hamstring as he headed toward the tunnel at Kyle Field. Some teammates accompanied him as he cautiously exited the area.
As he was leaving, a police officer stepped between Harbaugh and running back Oscar Adaway III, making contact in the process. The officer then reprimanded Harbaugh, who turned around but continued toward the field.
In the wake of this interaction, the university police announced that the officer would no longer be on duty for the game and was sent home. NBA star LeBron James expressed his outrage and called for the officer’s suspension on social media, stating, “That A&M cop should be suspended! That was premeditated and corny!”
At that moment, the touchdown had given South Carolina a commanding 27-3 lead, which later swelled to 30-3. Yet, the Aggies mounted an incredible comeback, ultimately winning 31-30.
In an impressive turn of events, Texas A&M outscored South Carolina 28-0 in the second half, marking the largest comeback in the school’s history. Marcell Reed led the Aggies with a remarkable 439 rushing yards and three touchdowns, pushing Texas A&M to a 10-0 season so far.
Reed’s performance was particularly noteworthy considering his struggles in the first half, where he threw two interceptions and lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown, putting the Aggies in a 30-3 hole at one point. The comeback is particularly impressive, as historically teams with a 27-point deficit in Southeastern Conference play have lost all 286 previous games since 2004.
Texas A&M secured its first lead on a 4-yard run by EJ Smith with around 11 minutes left. They attempted to extend their advantage with a first down at the 1-yard line, but a fumble on a trick play allowed South Carolina to recover the ball as three minutes remained.
Despite the loss, South Carolina’s quarterback Lanoris Sellers threw for 246 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception, marking the team’s fifth consecutive defeat this season.
