Teacher Arrested for Stalking and Sexually Assaulting Minor Student in Colorado

In another troubling case involving an educator in the U.S., a middle school teacher from suburban Denver is accused of having a sexual relationship with a teenage student for over a year and stalking the student after the affair ended.

Teresa Weylin, a 28-year-old teacher at Ranchview Middle School in Douglas County, allegedly exchanged nude photos with a minor, engaged in sexual acts, and created a fake phone number to contact the student anonymously in an attempt to rekindle the relationship, according to various media sources.

Interestingly, most reports, including those about the affidavit, do not specify whether the student is male or female.

This incident highlights a disturbing pattern of teachers, often young women, forming inappropriate relationships with their students.

The student is reportedly 12 years younger than the teacher and was approximately 14 years old when their sexual relationship began in April 2023 after they met during a gym class.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office arrested Weylin earlier this week on charges including sexual assault, internet exploitation of a child, and stalking, according to reports.

Following her arrest, the teacher was placed on administrative leave by the school district where she had worked since the summer of 2021.

The arrest affidavit indicates that the student had informed a school counselor about their relationship, which reportedly began when the teacher started offering support after school for the student’s mental health struggles.

According to reports, the pronoun “they” was used when detailing the arrest affidavit.

Eventually, the student expressed interest in dating a classmate, leading to the end of the relationship with Weylin. The affidavit mentions that Weylin continued driving near the homes and routes of students, which made the student feel afraid and led her to believe Weylin was “jealous” of her new relationship.

The teacher acknowledged the nature of their relationship and admitted she knew her actions were wrong, stating she deserved a prison sentence, as noted by the sheriff’s department.

Weylin was taken into custody at the Douglas County Detention Center and is currently being held on a $50,000 bail.

Reports indicate that sexual misconduct involving teachers and students has been on the rise, with an increase of 250% documented by 2017.

According to a 2023 report, there was a 53% rise in sexual assaults and a staggering 99% increase in cases of rape or attempted rape compared to the findings from 2015-2016.

The magazine noted that the actual figures could be significantly higher.

“However, these statistics are based solely on official reports and likely underrepresent the true scale of the issue. Previous studies found that only 6% of students reported experiencing sexual misconduct by educators,” the magazine asserted.
