Knicks Triumph Over Heat Despite Key Injuries
Mike Brown kept receiving a consistent message throughout the game.
With Jalen Brunson sidelined due to a sprained ankle and OG Anunoby out with a hamstring strain in the first quarter, the Knicks aimed to utilize Karl-Anthony Towns early during their 140-132 victory against the Heat at Madison Square Garden.
Brown’s assistant, Rick Brunson, emphasized the plan. “We wanted to play through him, which was fantastic. Rick was really driving the point home,” Brown noted. “He kept insisting, ‘Hey, keep playing until KAT. Just keep playing until KAT.’”
Towns demonstrated an aggressive approach throughout the game, amassing 18 points in the first quarter and 31 in the first half alone.
He took 10 shots during the first quarter and 16 in total for the half.
As the game progressed, he often faced double teams, shifting into a facilitator role.
“I don’t want to force myself to score 60 points and lose,” Towns stated. “Winning is what matters most. I learned a lot from past experiences. I focused on being aggressive but also active in playmaking, ensuring my teammates got chances to contribute.”
As for Anunoby, no updates were available on Saturday after he exited in the first quarter due to a left hamstring strain.
Mitchell Robinson’s exceptional offensive rebounding has become a regular highlight.
Interestingly, Brown overlooked Robinson’s impressive eight offensive boards in his initial remarks after Friday’s win. “I’m kind of getting fed up with that,” he joked. “As you all know, I can be a bit long-winded, and I didn’t want to repeat myself.”
Nonetheless, he soon recognized Robinson’s efforts. “Damn Mitch Robinson, oh my god,” Brown exclaimed. “Those eight offensive rebounds were amazing! Just what we expect from Mitch!”
In other news, James Borrego, who was interviewed by the Knicks for their vacant head coach position this offseason, has been named interim head coach of the Pelicans following Willie Green’s dismissal on Saturday.
