Coach Pochettino Prepares for World Cup Selection
CHESTER, Pa. — Mauricio Pochettino intends to be fair in his selection of the 26 players for the U.S. men’s national team heading into the World Cup.
However, don’t assume anyone’s position is guaranteed.
Just outside Subaru Park, a countdown clock ticked down towards next June’s World Cup, reminding fans that Pochettino’s time to finalize his roster for 2026 is limited.
In the days leading up to Saturday’s friendly against Paraguay, which the U.S. won 2-1, several high-profile players, like Christian Pulisic and Tyler Adams, were absent due to injuries.
This situation prompted coaches to clarify what’s at stake for the players in camp.
“I think the players who truly deserve to be here are the ones we want to see and select,” Pochettino expressed. “No one should feel secure, not even Pulisic or Adams. The federation is larger than any individual name.”
Pochettino emphasized the importance of the national team as a representation of the country.
With other notable absentees, such as Weston McKennie, Chris Richards, and Malik Tillman, Pochettino is making it clear that every player needs to prepare to be called up for the World Cup.
“This is a significant opportunity. If we decide to choose another player, that player needs to be ready to rise to the occasion and demonstrate that they can contribute to the squad,” he elaborated.
Pulisic’s situation has been a hot topic since the Gold Cup earlier this year. He chose to rest rather than compete after a grueling club season.
Having returned for the September training camp, Pulisic was sidelined due to an October injury but has since recovered. In a recent interview, he outlined his current priorities.
“I just want to ensure my hamstring is fully healed and allow other players to step up. I believe this is the best path for everyone right now,” he stated.
Following Saturday’s match and the upcoming friendly against Uruguay in Tampa, Pochettino’s team won’t gather again until March. The coach has confirmed a finalized squad for the last training camp before the World Cup begins on May 27. There are no plans to exclude anyone yet.
“I think it’s tricky to bring more than 26 players. On the final day, it’s tough to inform someone they’ve been cut. I prefer to bring in 26 I believe will participate, and if there’s a need due to an injury, I can call someone up later,” he commented. “It feels crueler to go to a game, only to find out you’re out. But if something changes, then it’s a different situation.”
