New Sleep Trend: The Potato Bed
There’s a new way to enjoy a restful night’s sleep—it’s called the “potato bed,” and it’s been gaining popularity on TikTok. This trend involves rearranging your sheets and pillows to create a snug, comfy sleeping space.
To start, you turn a fitted bed sheet inside out and then surround it with thick pillows and blankets. Think of it as building a little nest. Once you’ve got that set up, fill the center with blankets, comforters, and any other cozy items you have on hand.
If you want to take it up a notch, consider adding a laptop to stream movies or grab a good book to enjoy. Many TikTok users are trying this out for themselves. One user, Alice, shared her experience, calling it the “best night’s sleep ever.”
Another person chimed in humorously, “So only adult-sized baby nests? No wonder I slept so well!” And yet another added, “I’m already a couch potato but now I’ll be a bed potato too.”
Dr. William Lu, a medical director at Dream Health, weighed in on this trend, describing it as a “fun and cozy interpretation” of cocooning, which is about creating a comforting sleep environment. He noted that it’s not surprising this concept is catching on, as many people seek comfort and safety in their routines.
“While it may seem playful, the potato bed really addresses a deep need for relaxation and a sense of security during sleep,” Lu explained. Sleep experts emphasize that being gently wrapped in soft materials can help reduce stress hormones and promote feelings of relaxation.
“When both your body and mind feel safe, it becomes easier to drift off and stay asleep,” Lu added.
However, he did offer some warnings. For optimal sleep, your core body temperature needs to drop a bit, so excessive warmth can be problematic. Layering too much can trap heat, making it harder for your body to cool down.
Additionally, using too many soft pillows might compromise your spine’s alignment, potentially causing discomfort over time. If you wake up feeling sore or overheated, it might be time to reassess your setup.
Lu suggested treating the potato bed more like a cozy relaxation ritual rather than a long-term sleep strategy. He believes it’s best suited for short naps or winding down during colder months. For a balanced sleep environment, opting for one lightweight duvet and fewer layers while ensuring proper support from your mattress is advisable.
“The aim is to create a comforting, calming space that helps your body and mind wind down as you prepare for sleep,” he concluded.
