Couple Arrested After Shoplifting in Long Island
Last week, two undocumented immigrants made their way from Manhattan to Long Island and were apprehended after attempting to steal from a Target location, according to authorities.
Gustavo Telles Carrillo, 36, and his girlfriend Erica Gomez Moreno, 33, reportedly tried to shoplift various items from a Westbury store the previous Sunday evening.
Nassau County police arrived at the scene around 7:30 p.m. and took the couple into custody.
Following a brief investigation, officers found that both individuals were in the country illegally.
Details about their country of origin have not been revealed.
According to Nassau police, Carrillo and Moreno were charged with fourth-degree grand larceny and subsequently handed over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
This puts them at risk of deportation.
The transfer was part of a contentious collaboration between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities, allowing Nassau police to assist in the identification and detention of undocumented immigrants.
Nassau County has plans to detain over 3,000 immigrants for ICE, following an agreement made by County Executive Bruce Blakeman earlier this year. The county currently has ten federal detectives available to support immigration operations.
Blakeman stated, “Nassau County is the first in the nation to enter a fully comprehensive agreement with ICE under the 287(g) program, and we will keep working with ICE to safeguard our community from unvetted illegal immigrants who engage in criminal activities like distributing fentanyl.”
