Porter Shines in Nets’ Victory
In Washington, Michael Porter Jr. earned the nickname “Never Swing the Rock.” But after providing a career-high seven assists in two consecutive games, that title might need a rethink.
Nets coach Jordi Fernandez challenged Porter to rethink his playing style. He suggested that Porter, known for his movement without the ball, should focus less on dribbling and more on cutting, which could benefit the whole team.
The strategy paid off—Porter not only excelled in playmaking, but he also led the team with 34 points in Sunday’s 129-106 victory over the Wizards. He shot 11 of 18, pulled down nine rebounds, and, of course, had those seven assists.
“He wants to improve and show new skills,” Fernandez remarked. “By finishing his cuts without overthinking or over-dribbling, we all see the benefits.” He added that Porter’s improved play is infectious for the team, and he’s genuinely proud of the forward.
In contrast, Porter had a tough outing on Friday, scoring only one field goal. However, in this game against Washington, he played smartly and effectively.
Reflecting on his time in Denver, Porter indicated that some believed his cutting ability originated from teammate Nikola Jokic’s vision. “I’ve always been a cutter,” he insisted. “I just look for easy baskets, and with players like Claxton and Sharpe, I’m getting those opportunities.”
Claxton also turned in a season-best performance, registering four blocks along with 17 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. His averages this season, 15.2 points and 3.9 assists, are career highs.
The Nets’ total of 129 points marked a season high for them and the most since they scored 132 against Portland in January. They also achieved a season-high 32 assists.
In other news, rookie point guard Ben Saraf suffered an ankle injury during Long Island’s last G League game and didn’t return. An update from the Nets is anticipated on Monday, as the team assesses the situation.
