Trump Plans Meeting with New York City Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani
President Donald Trump has indicated that New York City’s newly elected mayor, Zoran Mamdani, will be visiting him at the White House soon. This follows Mamdani’s recent victory in the election.
Trump mentioned that Mamdani reached out to express interest in a meeting, and he stated he’d “work something out.” As of now, White House press secretary Caroline Levitt has confirmed that no specific date has been scheduled for this encounter.
“The mayor of New York wants to meet with us and we want to work something out. He wants to come to Washington, and we will coordinate,” Trump told reporters before heading back to Washington from Florida on Sunday. The goal, he emphasized, is to ensure things go smoothly for New York.
Interestingly, prior to Election Day, Trump had harshly criticized Mamdani’s mayoral campaign, referring to him as a “communist” and even endorsing former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo just days before the election.
In a more contentious note, Trump sent a message to his supporters on Election Day stating, “Jews who vote for Zoran Mamdani, an avowed Jew-hater, are idiots!!!” He also urged voters to support Cuomo, regardless of personal feelings about him, as he asserted that Mamdani wouldn’t be capable of doing a good job.
Mamdani has pledged to challenge Trump’s immigration policies aggressively, which in turn heightens the tensions between the mayor’s office and the White House. Trump, for his part, has warned that he may restrict federal funding if Mamdani fails to collaborate.
Earlier this month, Trump expressed his dire outlook on the city under Mamdani’s leadership, stating that if the “communists” gain control, he won’t support New York financially. His remarks emphasized his belief that such a regime would lead to severe issues for the city.
“If the communists take over, things will only get worse. As president, I can’t waste taxpayers’ money on a sinking ship,” he added, highlighting his apprehensions about Mamdani’s impact on New York’s future.
