Shocking That 186,000 Deceased Individuals Are Receiving SNAP Benefits

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Announces Crackdown on SNAP Fraud

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins stated on Thursday that the agency plans to tackle large-scale fraud and misuse within the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

This announcement follows concerns after a recent Democratic government shutdown that put some individuals at risk of losing their SNAP benefits.

In an interview with Newsmax, Rollins described the situation as alarming, mentioning that in the past month, around 5,000 individuals have died, bringing the total to nearly 186,000 across the country—a shocking figure. She noted, “Right now, we are beginning to crack down on the 500,000 individuals who are still receiving benefits.”

She highlighted that the data discussed mainly covered 29 states, primarily those with Republican leadership, and posed a question: “Imagine what the figures would look like from states that lean Democratic?”

Rollins emphasized the necessity of rebuilding the SNAP program, urging that everyone reapply for benefits to ensure that recipients understand their reliance on this support. “This is the next critical step,” she added.

Separately, Rep. Wesley Hunt from Texas has urged Rollins to enhance enforcement against fraud and abuse related to illegal immigration within the SNAP system. In a letter, he insisted on the importance of making data accessible to the public and prioritizing taxpayers’ needs, stating appreciation for uncovering significant fraud within SNAP.

Recent reports have indicated that during the Democratic government shutdown, Rollins found cases of EBT cards with substantial unused balances, some exceeding $10,000, and instances of cards associated with non-existent individuals.

SNAP, originally established during the Great Depression, has seen significant growth under the Biden administration, now assisting about 42 million people, roughly one-eighth of the U.S. population.
