Oregon track athlete shares her thoughts on including trans individuals in girls' sports

Message from a Former Track Star on Women in Sports

Alexa Anderson, a former high school track athlete from Oregon, recently reached out to girls facing challenges around transgender participation in sports. Earlier this year, she made headlines for her stance against sharing the podium with a transgender competitor.

Polls indicate that a majority of Americans believe women should compete solely against other women in sports. However, it seems that not all states are adhering to former President Donald Trump’s executive order that restricts transgender athletes from competing in categories aligned with their gender identity.

On a recent appearance on “America’s Newsroom,” Anderson emphasized the necessity for girls and women to voice their concerns. She expressed, “This is unfair and it’s not safe. We must stand together as girls directly impacted by this issue.” She urged others to advocate for change and challenge those in control.

Anderson, alongside her teammate Reece Eckerd, chose to step away from the podium during the high jump ceremony at the Oregon state championships after finishing third. This decision quickly garnered significant online attention, raising more questions about the participation of transgender athletes in women’s categories.

In subsequent discussions, Anderson opened up about receiving threats and her ongoing battle for recognition from the Oregon School Activities Association. Reflecting on her stand against what she views as an injustice, she noted, “It was a stressful moment, undeniably. With everything happening, I felt strongly about not allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports. I had to make that stand for all the girls impacted.” Looking back, she stated she wouldn’t change her decision.

Despite the backlash and negativity, she shared, “The amount of support and kindness from many individuals has been incredible and worthwhile. I can only hope this leads to positive changes.”
