Uncovering Daily Life in Pompeii Through Ancient Artifacts

Artifacts found in the ruins of Pompeii shed light on the everyday lives of its inhabitants from around 2,000 years ago. Recently, attention has turned to Egyptian ceramics uncovered during excavations in this ancient Roman city—specifically, items linked to the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

A recent article detailed the discovery of a striking greenish-blue vase, typically associated with the Vesuvian region, which was often used as an ornamental piece in various settings. Interestingly, this particular vase seems to have been repurposed as a kitchen container.

The findings were shared in a publication from the Pompeii Archaeological Park, highlighting a bucket-shaped container linked to a thermopolium—a type of fast food establishment where the working and middle classes could buy meals and drinks. More than 80 such places have been identified in Pompeii alone.

This thermopolium, which was fully excavated and restored in 2020, stands out due to its well-preserved state and the artistic depictions of animals on its walls. The establishment featured a counter embedded with large containers, a kitchen equipped with ingredient storage, and even an apartment upstairs for the manager. A bathroom was conveniently located just inside the entrance.

Pompeii was buried under volcanic ash following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, plunging the city into darkness akin to an unlit room. After thousands of people lost their lives, the area remained undisturbed until its rediscovery in 1748, largely intact beneath the layers of ash.

Artifacts and structures from these buried cities continue to offer invaluable insights into ancient daily life. A park director pointed out how the creative use of decorative items reflects diverse tastes and perhaps religious beliefs that permeated Roman society—traits that were not exclusive to the elite but visible in everyday life, especially in the more modest food shops.

The recent excavation, though conducted in 2023, only revealed its discoveries to the public recently, creating some excitement around this historical treasure trove. This blend of sacred and everyday themes in Pompeii encapsulates the local society’s role in embracing various cultural influences, including those from Eastern religious customs.
