Gavin Newsom Emerges as Democratic Frontrunner for 2028 Presidential Election
California Governor Gavin Newsom has been identified as the leading candidate for the Democratic nomination in the 2028 presidential race, according to a column in Politico published on Saturday.
Political columnist Jonathan Martin pointed out that over the past two years, Newsom has strategically positioned himself as the likely front-runner. Martin noted, “No Democrat has had a better two years than Gavin Newsom, allowing him to take on this new title.”
There’s a lot of talk about Newsom’s combination of political experience, a solid grasp of social media dynamics, and his ability to engage younger voters. Martin expressed that Newsom aligns with the historical trend of young, outsider candidates, citing figures like Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama. He suggested Newsom could effectively challenge the status quo while also reassuring party elites.
Furthermore, Martin emphasized Newsom’s centrist approach, which might appeal to a broader range of party members. In his own words, Newsom has expressed a desire for the Democratic Party to be “an inclusive party,” indicating his somewhat ambivalent relationship with different factions within the party.
This positioning has made Newsom an “early front-runner,” as he skillfully focuses criticism on President Donald Trump. Martin made a note of several instances where clashes between Newsom and Trump have raised the governor’s profile. For instance, their early confrontations during the Los Angeles wildfires in 2025 helped elevate his visibility.
After those disputes with Trump, Newsom’s stances on issues like redistricting reportedly solidified his standing within the party for the upcoming primary elections.
Martin also pointed out that Newsom’s critical remarks about Trump have garnered him further support from the considerable anti-Trump coalition, even winning over some skeptics of his own.
