Thomas Crooks changed from supporting Trump to opposing him online before the shooting.

Authorities have revealed that Thomas Crooks opened fire during a Trump rally last year, firing eight shots, which resulted in one fatality and left two others seriously injured. The shooting also grazed the president’s ear. The victim was 50-year-old Corey Comperatore, while David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74, sustained injuries that required hospitalization. At the time, Trump, who was campaigning to regain the presidency, ducked for cover, and blood was later seen on the side of his face.

Recently, the New York Post published an editorial urging the government to provide more details on the shooting, suggesting that a lack of transparency was allowing conspiracy theories to take root.

Security lapses lead to greater scrutiny in the wake of the Charlie Kirk shooting.

An anonymous source who uncovered numerous scam accounts mentioned, “The threat from scammers has been apparent online for quite some time. This individual showed signs of radicalization and violent rhetoric under his real name—clearly, there was no hidden threat.” Despite the FBI informing Congress that Crooks didn’t appear to follow a specific ideology, sources indicated that his ideology shifted towards violence over time.

FBI Director Kash Patel stated that over 480 agents conducted an investigation where they carried out more than 1,000 interviews and looked into 2,000 public tips. They examined 500,000 digital files and uncovered 25 scam accounts online. Crooks was said to have prepared for the attack alone, without disclosing his intentions to anyone.

In hindsight: Charlie Kirk cautioned about a left-wing ‘assassination culture’ before this incident.

It is believed that Crooks acted independently, without any accomplices. While Crooks died at the scene, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson had been charged earlier for another assassination attempt in September. The FBI has yet to point to any political motive, although it appears that Crooks’ comments online transitioned from pro-Trump to increasingly violent rhetoric aimed at Democrats. This raises questions about the lead-up to his violent act against Trump.

Bill Gage, a former U.S. secret agent, questioned, “Given Trump’s history with Iran, how do you think he’d respond to potential threats?”

Charlie Kirk’s assassination—a recent instance of conservatives facing targeted attacks.

Investigators have labeled Crooks a loner with no past criminal record and no known mental health issues. The firearm used in the attack had been legally purchased by his father in 2013.

In a Congressional briefing held in July 2024, senators were informed that Crooks had made threatening posts on the gaming platform Steam prior to the shooting. One such post stated, “July 13th will be my first performance. Please watch how it unfolds.” Crooks’ laptop yielded searches related to Trump and Biden, as well as the scheduled July rally. He was also found with two cell phones at the scene.

Gage noted that the internet is vast, and Crooks represented a mentally troubled individual who slipped through the cracks. “We may never fully understand his true motivations,” he added.
