Poland blames Russian intelligence for a sabotage attack on its railways

A spokesperson for Poland’s special services minister claimed on Tuesday that Russian intelligence was responsible for a train bombing that damaged a critical railway line used for delivering aid to Ukraine. Jacek Dobrzynski stated, “Everything indicates” that this sabotage was orchestrated by Russian operatives. He further described the incident as a terrorist attack.

The explosion impacted a portion of the Warsaw-Lublin railway, with additional damage noted further south. Authorities are currently investigating the possibility of sabotage.

Dobrzynski mentioned that investigations into both incidents remain ongoing but he couldn’t specify what stage the investigators were at, saying, “We are currently working on it and examining which threads are connected.” He also suggested that the Russian military seems particularly interested in the movements of Polish police officers.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk characterized the explosion as “an unprecedented act of sabotage.” He confirmed that the track was compromised by an explosive detonation and mentioned ongoing assessments by emergency services and prosecutors of damage along the route near Lublin. Tusk vowed to identify the perpetrators in a statement he shared.

This incident unfolds against a backdrop of recent security tensions in Eastern Europe, including instances of airspace violations. A Russian drone intruded over Poland in September, and three MiG-31 jets breached Estonian airspace, where NATO aircraft subsequently intercepted them.

The National Security Committee of the Polish government convened on Tuesday, featuring discussions with military commanders and intelligence leaders regarding the situation.
