Bill Maher ends his tour because of concerns about being targeted by extremists

Bill Maher announced on Monday that he has decided to cancel his upcoming stand-up performances, largely due to increasing safety concerns. He expressed that he no longer feels at ease performing live, particularly given the current political climate, which he describes as deeply divided and, frankly, dangerous.

Maher stated, “I think it’s a smart decision because I don’t want to be in a country where I could be shot at from either side.” He also mentioned that perhaps it’s just a good time to stay home.

Comedian Marc Maron shared his thoughts during the conversation, remarking that Maher had “always had a problem” and humorously deemed him “hopeless.”

Maher, known for his critical views of both sides of the political spectrum, discussed these issues with fellow comedian Patton Oswalt on his podcast. His comments, notably, come just two months after political activist Charlie Kirk was tragically killed during an event at Utah Valley University.

In addition to safety concerns, Maher explained that he was growing weary of traveling and found it frustrating that other comedians seemed to outshine him in ticket sales. He reflected, “I got tired of people being twice as interesting as those selling twice as many tickets as I was.” Despite having successful shows, he lamented, “It’s not that we didn’t sell a lot; we just weren’t selling out arenas.”

He speculated that a difference in appeal might be due to his frequent appearances on HBO’s “Real Time” making some of his material feel dated. Additionally, he suggested that generational differences could be a factor, noting that an audience in the 35 to 45 age range might not be as interested in a 70-year-old comic.

Even with these challenges, Maher affirmed that he still has his show and expressed contentment with his current situation. “I didn’t need the touring gigs,” he added, acknowledging a sense of nostalgia but accepting where he is now.
