Mercy Health signs contract with Humana

New Health Coverage Agreement in Clark and Champaign Counties

Beginning December 1, a new contract will enable 7,458 patients in Clark and Champaign counties to receive in-network health coverage through MercyHealth, as stated by the health system.

This agreement ensures that Mercy Health’s hospitals, physicians, urgent care clinics, ambulatory surgery centers, and other treatment facilities remain in-network for all patients with Humana insurance.

Adam Groshans, Mercy Health Springfield’s president, emphasized, “We understand how stressful these negotiations can be for patients, and our priority throughout this process has been to protect our patients from uncertainty and confusion.”

He noted that with this agreement, Humana patients will still have access to their healthcare providers and Mercy Health services without interruption.

Groshans also expressed gratitude, stating, “We deeply appreciate your patience and resilience and remain committed to providing compassionate, high-quality care now and in the future.”

In October, Mercy Health representatives mentioned concerns regarding the reimbursement rates from Humana, indicating they were insufficient for safe, quality care.

Additionally, they pointed out that Humana has a notably high claim denial rate, as previously mentioned on Mercy Health’s website.

A spokesperson for Humana did not provide an immediate comment on Monday, but earlier statements from the insurer highlighted their commitment to balancing affordability, quality care, and long-term sustainability for members.

Humana officials had previously asserted they are “working in good faith to reach a resolution that avoids disruption and maintains access to reliable health care.”
