MLB Prospect in Intensive Care After Fatal Car Crash

An MLB prospect is currently in “intensive care” following a car accident in the Dominican Republic, which sadly claimed the lives of three individuals.

Antonio Jimenez, a 24-year-old pitcher in the San Francisco Giants’ minor league system, sustained serious injuries including a fractured femur and vertebrae, along with several lacerations from the incident that occurred on Monday morning.

Reports indicate that the crash involved an SUV and two scooters, taking place outside the Altis office building in San Pedro de Macoris.

The Giants released a statement saying, “We are aware of a tragic car accident involving one of our players, Antonio Jimenez, and are gathering further information. Out of respect for everyone affected, we will not be commenting further at this time as this is an ongoing investigation.”

Jimenez’s team in the Dominican Winter League, Toros del Este, expressed their support via social media: “We send our prayers to our pitcher Antonio Jimenez, who sustained multiple injuries in an unfortunate car accident. We offer our condolences and prayers to the families of the victims who lost their lives in the incident.”

Ranked as the Giants’ No. 31 prospect by Prospect Savant, Jimenez had pitched for the team’s Triple-A affiliate this past season. In 45.2 innings, he managed a 3.55 ERA, while opponents batted .217 against him. His performance included striking out 27.9% of batters faced, although he also had a walk rate of 17.3%.

Having started his minor league career with the Tampa Bay Rays at 18, Jimenez joined the Giants before last season, marking a new chapter in his baseball journey.
